Updated: Mar 21

Quilting is a beloved craft that allows us to create beautiful and functional pieces of art. Whether you are a seasoned quilter or just starting out, having the right tools can truly enhance your quilting experience. Here are some must-have quilting tools that every quilter should have in their toolkit:

  1. Rotary Cutter: A sharp rotary cutter is essential for cutting fabrics accurately and quickly. Look for one with a comfortable grip and a safety lock feature to keep your fingers safe.

  2. Self-healing Cutting Mat: Protect your work surface and extend the life of your rotary cutter blades with a self-healing cutting mat. Choose a size that fits your work area and make sure it has gridlines for precise cutting.

  3. Quilting Ruler: A quilting ruler is a versatile tool that helps you measure and cut fabrics with precision. Look for a clear acrylic ruler with marked measurements for easy visibility. my personal favourite is quilters select none slip rulers.

  4. Seam Ripper: Mistakes happen, and a seam ripper is your best friend when it comes to fixing them. Choose a sharp seam ripper with a comfortable grip for easy seam ripping.

  5. Thread Snips: Keep your work neat and tidy with a pair of thread snips. These small scissors are perfect for trimming threads close to the fabric without accidentally cutting into it.

  6. Sewing Machine: While hand quilting is a beautiful art form, a sewing machine can save you time and effort, especially for piecing quilts. A basic sewing machine will work just fine, but if you're looking to splurge, consider a machine with quilting-specific features such as a walking foot and a wide throat space.

  7. Quilting Needles: Invest in a good set of quilting needles for both hand quilting and machine quilting. Choose needles that are sharp and durable to glide through multiple layers of fabric effortlessly.

  8. Iron and Ironing Board: Pressing seams is a crucial step in quilting to create crisp and professional-looking results. A good quality iron and a sturdy ironing board will make this task much easier.

  9. Basting Spray: Basting spray is a handy tool for securing your quilt layers together before quilting. Choose a temporary basting spray that washes out easily and does not leave residue on your fabric.

  10. Quilting Gloves: Quilting gloves provide grip and control when free motion quilting on a sewing machine. Look for gloves with rubberized grips on the fingertips for maximum traction.
